- Maimonides Digitization Project
The Jewish National and University Library, David and Fela Shapell Family
Digitization Project, is pleased to announce that in commemoration of the 800th
anniversary of the death of Moses Maimonides, the library has digitized and
opened for public access its rarest manuscripts and books by Maimonides.
The digital collection includes part of the commentary on the Mishnah in
Maimonides' own hand, an illuminated manuscript of the Mishneh Torah, various
other 13th-15th century manuscripts and several incunabula and early 16th
century prints.
The manuscripts and books are presented in the DjVu format which provides
high quality, magnifiable images compressed into relatively small files for easy
downloading. In order to view these images it is necessary to download and
install (once) a special free viewer program.
This project, the first of a planned "Treasures of the JNUL" series,
complements the "Great Eagle at the JNUL" exhibit at the JNUL (Dec. 19,
2004-Feb. 28, 2005), presenting full versions of many of the items on
display.
A digital version of the exhibit will be available soon.
The Maimonides digitization project can be accessed in both Hebrew and
English versions via the library site: http://jnul.huji.ac.il
